My tryst with motivation

July 27, 2024by Editorial Team
Motivation is a slow and gradual process

As in life, so with Motivation: we all have our own struggles. However it is we ourselves who have the answers to come out of them, find the answers to our problem of demotivation.

My struggle with demotivation

Demotivation always comes naturally to me. While I am mostly in control and enjoy every moment, at times I find it difficult to even push myself out of bed. When ‘deadline’ , ‘exams’ , ‘time management’ had circumscribed my life, it became unimaginably difficult. Battling demotivation at these times was most challenging.

I have my own solutions

Motivation, however, is not a fleeting rush, rather a slow and gradual process. However, it took me a while to identify them. These were four C words: Choice, Control, Consequence and Community, that were the very keys I was looking for. Keys to unlocking motivation, keys I used every time I had felt suffocated in a tiny box: keys that helped me breathe.I realised I didn’t need any help from outside to find motivation. I had always had the solution within myself.

An open mind can draw motivation

In fact I drew inspiration and learnt many things from my friends. When my friend Nilayam told me“You did not believe in yourself and so, you did not find motivation.” , I realised what she said was true.I doubted myself, and looked for validation everywhere but within myself. I set up unrealistic expectations for myself and put myself on a pedestal. When I failed to meet my own standards, I stood hopelessly demotivated. I recalled all those times I was unnecessarily harsh on myself. That my friend had so beautifully touched the exact part that needed healing, had boggled my mind.

Key learnings

I learnt the importance of setting SMART goals for oneself can help one remain motivated. SMART goals are those that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound. Lastly, I learnt it is important to take things easy. I learned that it was sometimes okay not to feel motivated. At times, all one needs is rest or a reward to get back on one’s feet. The quote: “It is okay to not always be okay” gave me immense comfort and assurance. To be able to unclench your fists after a full breath and give yourselves a well deserved break is in itself a great motivator. Motivation is an instrument to inspire each other, wherein individuals can get mutually charged with the stories of each other. As we share our thoughts, we unlock parts of ourselves and have valued learnings that we never thought existed.
