Boredom leads to greatness
What is boredom and what does it make us want to do
Boredom is that phenomena when our brains are not stimulated enough to stay interested and focused on the current activity. A network known as default mode network is activated when people are bored. Interestingly, it links our body to the subconscious mind. It motivates our behavior and actions and puts up new innovative ideas in our mind. We get the power to create, giving us a taste of adventure. Boredom is like a primary ingredient that help cultivate humans as an intelligent and curious species. We do get revolutionary ideas while taking a shower or simply listening to music. However , living in an overstimulated world where we are bombarded with constant notifications and information, our brain is forced to switch rapidly and get distracted in the process. Austin Kleon has so appropriately mentioned in her book ‘Steal like an Artist’: “Take time to be bored, and let your ideas pop up in your head”. During moments of boredom, our minds are able to wander, to get creative with problem solving and let ones dormant ideas find place to plant roots and grow.
Boredom can arise from various factors, including reputation, lack of novelty or challenge, unfulfilled expectations and insufficient stimulation is in some cases. However it can signal a grand opportunity for reflection, recreation and self-discovery and growth, as one shifts perspective. It is here that one needs to relook at boredom as an opportunity for a break and think creatively.
Why take a break
Understanding the underlying causes of boredom and adopting effective coping mechanisms can help individuals, navigate and harness.Journal of Applied Psychology suggests that brief diversions from a task can dramatically improve one’s ability to focus on that task for prolonged periods. The journal has also suggested that taking regular breaks can reduce stress and prevent burnout. Another study has shown that taking breaks during work hours is associated with reduced musculoskeletal discomfort and improve mental well-being. A research conducted at the university of Illinois- Urbana Champaigne indicates that taking breaks can enhance creative thinking and problem solving abilities. The optimal break duration and frequency has been notified in the Pomodoro technique developed by Francis Cirillo. It recommends working in blocks of 25 minutes, followed by a short break of 5 to 10 minutes. The interval is believed to maximise productivity and focus. It is suggested that the ideal work to break ratio is approximately 52 minutes of work followed by 17 minutes break.
Innovative pursuits
To combat the overt distraction of students over mobile phones, one can think of a simple experiment, the aim of which would be to induce reduction of screen time. It can be devised as a 7 day test after which the student with the most creative idea and lowest screen time can be rewarded. This can motivate students, inducing increased participation that can help address the problem of unhealthy addiction.
