The value of vulnerability

June 25, 2024by Editorial Team

Vulnerability and our strength to overcome, can prove to be the turning point in our lives. To make a difference through our actions, it is important that we connect with it at a personal level first.

What makes me curious

Every time we experience an uncertain or some undesirable burst of emotion, it is a vulnerability that we encounter. It has been derived from the Latin word vulnus meaning ‘wounded’ . However a deeper introspection made me curious. Firstly, how can this cognitive feeling frame our entire existence as humane human beings? Secondly, how can it affect my life? And finally whether I myself am ‘wholehearted’ or ‘shame-filled.’ These questions made me look at my life in a way I had done before.

In order to identify the benefits of vulnerability in our lives, we can take the history of our own country. India was vulnerable to the attack of her invaders. They plundered her, exploited her and reduced of her erstwhile dignity; however this vulnerability could not deter her from being one of the most unique countries in the world, where people of different caste, creed, race and skin get unified seamlessly.

My personal connection with vulnerability

I had been overstressed with work just before my final examinations. Continuous participation in extra-curricular and academic events had almost led me to burnout. Ironically, it was this experience that gave me my ‘aha’ moment, as I realised this period of overworking led me to unravel new experiences in fields unknown to me, enriching my insatiable curiosity and fuelling my knowledge. From the bouts of creativity I was endowed with, I became a more educated and aware human being.

How I wish to spread the word

Now that I have realised the importance of my vulnerabilities, it will lead me to embrace them and fill the broken tiles of my imperfections with new imperfect ones to render a dazzling look. It will lead me to look at the world of limitations and shortcomings as signs of courage, compassion that can empower one to overcome failures. It fills me with gratitude for helping me acknowledge my own self, and inspire others to do the same for their own selves.

My key learnings

The most important step is to embrace our profound vulnerabilities in order to convert them to our super strengths. In order to achieve this, we need to start at the grassroot levels of our familial environment whether it is our family, friends or at school. To make this possible, we need to break free of the traditional shackles that bind society, making ourselves open to free and unscripted conversations. The age-old ideas of a Golden child that bind one to remain a fearful restricted being, need to give way to empower her to become a courageous individual. We shall thus transform our vulnerabilities as our newfound strengths.
